GOING DEEPER

Parenting: The Big Picture

Ephesians 6:1-4

  1. From your notes of this message what comment or verse caught your attention, challenged you or confused you?
  2. It’s no surprise that we repeat what we have learned from our models, and our most influential long-term model for our lives comes from the home we grew up in and the parents whom we watched most.  In the verses below are some values and standards we would like our own children to model.  List the values revealed in these verses, state your level of agreement of them and how you see them in your own parenting style.

Psalm 119:15-16

Romans 12:12, 14, 17, 21

Colossians 3:13

How would your children see these in you?

3. Our words matter in the presence of our children.  What do the following verses teach us about the power of our words in influencing those we wish to influence most for good?

James 3:3-5

Proverbs 15:23

Proverbs 15:30

Proverbs 3:27

4. From your particular home environment how would you grade your children on the two instructions from Paul (there is no record he ever had children of his own, but observed many new believing families in action).

Honor

Obey

5. Again from your own perspective, how would you grade yourselves a parent’s (especially fathers) on not pushing your children to exasperation?
